The Walloon Contemporary Art Centre (Belgium)
The
Walloon Contemporary Art Centre, “La Châtaigneraie”,
officially recognized in 1984 by the French-speaking
Community of Belgium, offers a variety of
exhibitions taking full advantage of all
contemporary techniques of creation. Specifically,
it takes an eclectic view of the art forms
considered. Thanks to this artistic policy, “La
Châtaigneraie” opens its doors to foreign artists
and institutions in order to collaborate in reaching
a more precise understanding of the artistic wealth
proper to each.
For its part, the Centre
organises or collaborates in setting up recurrent
exhibitions such as the two-yearly Mobiliers, a
furniture design and contemporary creation show; the
three-yearly Prix de la Jeune Sculpture
(Young Sculpture Prize) in
collaboration with the Sart Tilman Open-Air Museum…
From time to time, the Centre pays tribute to
artists and artistic movements that have left their
mark on the Liege region.
Objectives
The Centre wallon d’Art contemporain, “La Châtaigneraie”,
aims at promoting the interests of young artists as well as
providing an arena where they can meet each other and
develop a new awareness of contemporary artistic creation.
Its aims are:
- to break down a certain
rigidity and enable a lay public to discover the
exhibitions, in particular through parallel activities
organised in collaboration with the local cultural
centre.
- to contribute to and
encourage artistic education by the production of
historical and didactic literature as well as brochures
illustrating the exhibitions presented since 1979.
Role in ARTVENTURE, visual art network
In Belgium, two civilisations
meet, one Latin, one Germanic, and in spite of a linguistic
frontier across a country boasting three communities, there
is a cultural diversity of indisputable value. In such a
favoured situation, the Walloon Contemporary Art Centre, “La
Châtaigneraie”, encourages an awareness of this cultural
reality, which it shares with other partners. Through our
participation in ARTVENTURE, we wish to enhance the project
by our on-going reflection on contemporary African creation.
Even without the historical link between our country and
that continent, it is essential to recognise African culture
and its undeniable contribution, both past and present, to
European artistic creation. With this in mind, “La
Châtaigneraie” will initiate a dialogue based on a
confrontation between African and European creation, and at
the same time take a critical look at how each sees the
other, for, at a time when “original” art is in fashion in
Europe, Europe, paradoxically, is carefully closing its
frontiers to African immigration.
