apollonia, european art exchanges (France)

apollonia is an association governed under the terms of local law, founded in 1998, following on from work that began in 1994 under the auspices of the Council of Europe as part of the European Artistic Exchanges Programme. Apollonia functions as a genuine cooperative platform between European countries (and in particular the CEEC, the Balkans and Southern Caucasus) by bringing together artists, exhibition curators, art critics, galleries, museums and cultural institutions and operators.

The principal activities of the association are:

  • Organisation of the network
  • Organisation of European-wide events of various kinds:
    • travelling exhibitions (2003-04, 34 exhibitions, 380 artists);
    • European University (2003-04: 2 Universities, 67 speakers);
    • Forum of Thessaloniki (2003-04: 2 Forums, 180 speakers);
    • artists’ and art critics’ residences (2003-04: 10 residences);
    • conferences (2003-04: 6 conferences, 27 speakers)...
  • Widespread distribution of information (Publications, Internet, Art Review…) relative to contemporary creation in the countries at the periphery of Europe.

Objectives
apollonia encourages cultural diversity and plurality of expression of contemporary artists throughout Europe.

The association (which employs 5 permanent staff members) has as its objective:

  • the integration of artists and cultural operators from more far-flung areas into the Western European network

  • encouraging artistic mobility through the organisation of major events in which they can participate

  • to increase the awareness of the public by publishing several editions (catalogues, conference acts), and organising meeting with the artists in the framework of thematic conferences and while in residence.

Role in ARTVENTURE, visual art network
The overall coordination will be the responsibility of apollonia. A Management Committee composed by representatives of the partners will meet every six months in order to evaluate the current situation: calendar, activities and administrative aspects.

By its expertise in Central and Eastern Europe and the Southern Caucasus area, apollonia will activelly participate in the ARTVENTURE network building. Having broached a set of themes through several projects (as mobility, criticism, innovative practices in art), apollonia will lead some of ARTVENTURE projects.
